Overview

If you run team-building sessions or want to help groups learn more effectively through outdoor or experiential activities, this workshop is for you.

Over two interactive days, you’ll build confidence in using simple but powerful facilitation tools to develop teams and individuals. You’ll leave with practical techniques and ready-to-use ideas for leading meaningful reflection and discussion after activities.

This isn’t about learning new “games” — it’s about how to use what you already do to develop people and teams, creating deeper learning experiences.

Who It’s For

This workshop is ideal for:

  • Outdoor instructors or activity leaders wanting to add more value to their sessions.

  • Practitioners involved in apprenticeships, trainee instructor schemes, or leadership development programmes.

  • New or developing instructors looking to gain confidence in facilitation.

  • Experienced practitioners who want to gain a deeper understanding of facilitating methods and activity sequencing.

If you’re working towards APIOL or are on the Outdoor Instructor Apprenticeship, this course will help strengthen your facilitation and reflection skills.

What You’ll Learn

The workshop adapts to the group but typically covers:

  • How to use effective questions to draw out learning.

  • Listening and observation skills for facilitators.

  • Choosing and sequencing activities for maximum impact.

  • Helping groups transfer learning beyond the session with a focus on ‘process not plastic’

Course Structure

Day 1: Explore different approaches to team development and try out simple models that help participants make sense of their experience.

Day 2: We explore activity sequencing and everyone runs an activity (typically in pairs) and receives coaching feedback from peers in a supportive environment.

We’ll work mostly indoors with some outdoor activities as discussion starters. Expect a hands-on, participatory couple of days.

Tea, coffee, and biscuits are included both days. Lunch can be purchased from the YHA.

My name is Sam and I work as a learning consultant specialising in experiential learning. I started running team development sessions whilst working as an outdoor instructor at a local college, and my interest in the topic grew from there.

I also work as a teaching fellow in experiential learning at the University of Leeds so I have an academic background in the use of environments other than the classroom for teaching and learning. I spend a lot of my time working with organisations to develop practitioners involved in professional learning.

I’m a caving instructor and I hold a range of outdoor qualifications. I’ve been a member of the Mountain Training Association for around 11 years.

"The workshop helped me think about how I run personal development / team building activities with a number of providers. I've also used the 'solution/problem' grid to redesign a few of my courses to give a better flow - that's been really useful. Thanks for a fantastic couple of days!"

Andy Royle

"I'd never been taught how to run any form of team building before, it's often just thrown at us. It's been really valuable to spend a couple of days really learning more about what makes effective team building sessions. I've really enjoyed seeing all the different activities people use as well, definitely using some of those in the future."
